Muizenberg

Muizenberg saw its first building (Het Posthuys) in about 1740. Apart from a small military posting little activity was recorded apart from fishing and later whaling. Simon’s Town was active and traffic from Cape Town passed through Wynberg and Muizenberg on the way to Kalk Bay, where the road ended and goods were loaded on to boats for the final leg. In 1795 Muizenberg’s big moment arrived in the form of the Battle of Muizenberg, a minor military skirmish but a momentous occasion which marked the First British Occupation of the Cape. Houses began to be built and the holiday trade began. The big boost to Muizenberg came in 1882 with the arrival of the railway. Easy access to Cape Town meant that people could live in Muizenberg and work in the City and just as important inland and Empire residents could reach the sea for a holiday.
The boom began.

"I found your story of the grave fascinating, such an odd spot in the centre of the suburb. It's great that the site of the Battle of Muizenberg is looking good. Thanks again."
Rosie
"Joined one of Chris Taylor's Muizenberg walks yesterday. It was a most enjoyable and informative experience, packed full of interesting facts about the area and its history. Chris is extremely knowledgable and an excellent and amusing raconteur. I would definitely recommend these walks to locals and tourists alike."
